Jude Tarrant

I feel that it is important to quietly spend time in the building where the new window is to be situated, to get to know the way in which the light enters the space and how it affects the atmosphere. Other stained glass windows and works of art and architecture in the building need to be considered where present, and respected in the design, also the requirements of the commissioning body. This could mean discussions with an individual customer as sponsor, or an architect, or parish priest, or involving the wider community.

I have also worked closely in consultation with school staff and pupils on some projects, incorporating the design ideas and actual artwork of the children as stained glass.

The strong structural element of the supporting lead and steel matrix becomes a major part of the design elements of my work, balanced by fluid painted line and vibrant colour of antique stained glass. I often make use of extensive aciding of flashed glass to achieve a rich depth of colour graduation and to harmonise colour shifts across the window.

Commissions

‘Remembrance’ - West window, St Johns School Chapel, Surrey

I prefer working with the traditional processes of painting on to antique glass with kiln fired oxide pigments, including screen printing and acid etching or sand-blasting where the design calls for it, and I do all of the cartooning, glass selection and painting, firing and aciding myself. Larger works require some teamwork in glass cutting or leading up and fitting windows.
